Atmel Launches New Innovative Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) Baseband IC for Cost-Sensitive Consumer and High-Performance Car Radio Applications

Device Offers a Unique Combination of Maximum Flexibility, Low Power Consumption and Low Price

HEILBRONN, Germany, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Atmel(R) Corporation (NASDAQ: ATML), a global leader in the development and fabrication of advanced semiconductor solutions, announced today the availability of its new DAB baseband processor ATR2740 for DAB applications. Due to the state-of-the-art 0.18-micron CMOS process used and the device's advanced architecture, this new baseband IC provides maximum flexibility and an extremely low current consumption at a low price. In contrast to comparable solutions available, which need additional design effort due to their proprietary software interfaces, the new baseband processor is controlled by a standard ARM(R) core, allowing designers to work with standard tools. Thus, development costs and time to market can be drastically reduced.

Due to the high integration of the device, only two external parts (a simple crystal and an 8-MB Flash memory) are required to run the full DAB function. All RAM functions such as interleaving or program memory are incorporated into the device, same as the analog-to-digital converter. The ATR2740 works perfectly together with Atmel's DAB front-end devices U2730B and U2731B.

The ATR2740 also provides a wide variety of supported interfaces: UART; USB; and SPI are available for control functions, SSO, SFCO and RDI interfaces as well as two audio outputs (I2S or SPDIF) are implemented as data interfaces.

At a full decoding data bit rate of 1.8 Mbit/s, the device's power consumption is as low as 180 mW, which is industry's lowest such value. The ATR2740's outstanding processing power enables the device to decode the full DAB data rate of 1.8 Mbit/s, which is needed especially for video and data streaming. In addition, the device provides sufficient unused processing power available on the ARM controller for customer software such as user interfaces. A complete MP3 player can be run without the need to add extra hardware to the device.

A complete set of hardware and software tools, including comprehensive documentation, is available on request. The software to run a DAB radio is available free of charge. This software covers all DAB-related functions and features as specified in Eureka 147.

Samples of the new ATR2740 baseband processor device in LQFP and BGA packages are available now. Pricing starts at US$ 16.00 (10 k).
